YP -- baseball games can get tense too; the game can turn on every pitch. But you're right, you could never really describe soccer as laid back. My problem with soccer is that it feels random (which is only because I don't understand it, I'm sure). Every now and again I can see a goal develop, but most of the time it's just *boom* -- back of the net. The announcers even seem surprised!

Sadly it seems that the only other country in the world that appreciates baseball as much as the USA does is, rather ironically, Cuba! The ballgame atmosphere you describe seems rather like cricket in England which is also slow and often relaxing with drinking and banter in the crowd. This contrasts with the high energy and tension of bigtime English soccer games.
